4 Quick And Simple Tips For Handling ANY Portrait Photoshoot

These four quick tips come from professional photographer Andy Fallon.

Sometimes photographers are so focused on their gear and the correct settings that they forget about the really important stuff. Like making your client as comfortable as possible. After all, you can’t get a nice portrait if they feel awkward, can you?

Keep calm It’s important to stay as calm as possible on a shoot… I’ve dropped and smashed a £2,000 lens at the start of a shoot and I’ve calmly picked it up and popped it back in my camera bag.

Do your homework Try to do as much research as you possibly can on the person you’re going to photograph.

Give your subject something to do with their hands Make sure any props are relevant to your subject… Peter Gabriel has been photographed a thousand times and so I wanted to collaborate with him on ideas for the shoot. He created the All Seeing Eye by covering his face with his hands and even though you can’t see his face it’s undoubtedly [him].

Ditch the tripod I prefer not to use a tripod for portraits… It takes me a few minutes to find my [angle].
