What You Need To Know About Being Married To A Wedding Photographer

Wedding-Couple-With-Photographer

I read this article recently over at Photography Talk. Couldn’t say that I disagree with any of these points.

It’s always frustrating when I ask my wife which shot looks better and she replies “They both look the same”. Definitely made me step back and laugh at myself.

They’ll be out of town a lot

If you’re married to a great wedding photographer, then his schedule will be booked for months and months. He’ll be away on destination weddings or for engagement location shoots. He’ll almost not be around, so you need to get your schedules straight if you want him there for important occasions.

They won’t text or call when they’re away

You can’t expect a wedding photographer to text or call to update you about his day, because he won’t have free time, or hands, to pick up the phone to let you know he’s eaten his lunch already. So, he’ll make up for it by having hilarious stories about how his day went when he comes back in the wee hours of the morning, after his event, while he’s eating, what might be his first meal of the day.

You’ll need to understand their lingo

If you don’t understand camera talk, trying to ask about what aperture or ISO is may not be the best thing to talk about when you have friends over, because soon enough he’ll be speaking in a completely foreign language, which leaves you and/or your friends clueless.

You need to know that two shots may look the same, but they’re not the same, really.

When they ask you, which shot is nicer, try to look really hard, as to which shot is nicer. Or better yet, just pick one. It’ll be a different conversation when you say, “Huh, they look the same to me.”

They obsess about other photographers, like big time.

They will follow the works of the photographers they like. They’ll compare their work. They’ll obsess. You’ll discover stalker-like qualities. These other photographers will be on their Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter news feeds, day in, day out.
