You can understand your camera perfectly, get the perfect exposure and focus but if you don’t get the right expressions from your subjects your photos WILL fall flat. Someone with an iPhone could do a better job than you if they’re better at working with their subjects.
Portrait photography requires good communication with your client, but most of all you need to be able to read the person you are photographing. If they seem tense and nervous (many people feel that way if they’re not used to being photographed) you have to come up with a way to loosen them up.
