Besides looking at only your images clients also look for credentials when deciding who to choose as a photographer. For example I can add to my website that in addition to being a professional photographer I am also the publisher and editor of Modern Lens Magazine. That carries a lot of weight when clients read my bio. It gives me the appearance of being an expert to the experts. One of the ways that you can establish credibility is by entering AND winning photography contests.
Another great reason to enter photo contests is the possibility of receiving professional feedback. While your friends and family may say your work is amazing (and they may be right!) they may not be experts in photography. Constructive criticism is a great way to learn and improve your existing talent.
