The circle of confusion really explains exactly how focus works. In particular it explains how aperture effects the depth of field or what we perceive to be in focus.

The focal plane or point focus is exactly the same at f2.8 or at f11. The real difference is what our eye perceives to be in focus. This can seem quite confusing and I know that many photographers don’t really want to get into the whole subject just because they feel unsure of it.

I remember the first time I ever ran into this, I tried to read about it as much as I could but it just didn’t make sense to me. This is an awesome video because it really explains everything in a simple way.
