How To Mix Flash With Ambient Light For World-Class Portraits

Another great thing about flash is you don’t necessarily have to use it to light your subject.

You could use natural light for your subject and turn around and light your background with flash. This technique and create some really stunning images. Especially when you combine the white with the color gel. In this video Craig Beckta used a Einstein E640 with a 20 Inch Silver Beauty Dish with a 1/4 cot gel and a diffusion sock to create a softer light source and a deeper blue sky in camera.

Tim Lingley used bare speed lights and a 1/4 cot gel to warm up the scene to blend the ambient light with strobes.

There is no, one way to approach this scene and I think you’ll enjoy our use of flash and ambient light.

In the second location Craig Beckta used a bare Silver BD and knocked down the ambient to create a darker moody portrait.

Tim Lingley did the opposite and used the available day light and ended up with a totally different result.
