Beginner photographers often start by using all the automatic settings – which is fine, but the camera doesn’t always give you an accurate reading.
When it comes to color temperature, most beginners just go with AWB (auto white balance). Sometimes I even still use it myself, if I have to take a picture really fast and I don’t have time to make too many adjustments. In fact, whenever I’m done with a photoshoot, I always set my camera back to AWB in case I suddenly run into a “Kodak moment” where I need to act fast. But whenever I’m setting up for a shoot, I prefer choosing my own white balance. In fact, if your camera allows it, I recommend setting up your own Kelvin readings – there are Kelvin light meters on the market for getting the most accurate results. If you don’t want to get a light meter, you can always get started with this color temperature cheat sheet! Click right to save on your computer.
