Why Canon Fails And Tamron Succeeds!

I already own a 70-200mm f2.8L IS II USM Canon lens

When viewing the focus breathing of the two different lenses I was sold on the Canon glass.

Embarrassingly enough I have continued shooting with the 24-105L lens that came as the kit lens with my camera body. I have been holding out on purchasing a 24-70mm f2.8.

Here are links to both the Canon and Tamron lenses over at Amazon.com.

Canon EF 24-70mm f/2.8L II USM $1899

Tamron SP 24-70mm Di VC USD $1299

While surfing over at Digital Photography School I saw this YouTube Video they had curated today on this lens so of course I was compelled to watch it. Is the Tamron the better purchase? If you already have tried both I would love to hear your opinions.

The Tamron 15-30 f/2.8 VC is an incredible piece of glass that shames L series architecture. The 70-200 f/2.8 VC equals the hallowed L without issue and the 24-70 is just a better value. Canon is nowhere near “by far superior.” They have a lens lineup with greater variety and depth but the SP series products by Tamron have proven, time and again, to meet or exceed first party counterparts. I’ve been selling their lenses at camera stores for years and always recommend them alongside the majors. The six year warranty alone (vs. Canon’s one year warranty in particular) often takes care of the deal.

The 15-30 f/2.8 shames the Canon 16-35 lenses. It’s not even close. The 24-70 is right on par with the f/4 L (which makes it sharper than the f/2.8 L, though the Tamron has a heavier vignette wide open), and the 70-200 VC is an extraordinary piece of glass for the money. Canon and Nikon and Sony should all be considering the rise of professional third party lenses and thinking on a proper response…
