There are many places to purchase a good used lens and save a ton of money. I have purchased used lenses myself and never had a problem. Of course I have always thoroughly inspected my purchases.

Here are a few suggestions on the best places to look:

#1 Craigslist

The nice thing about buying a used lens on Craigslist is you can inspect the lens pre-purchase. I’ve also found better deals here than in more competitive online locations. You would be surprised by how many barely used lenses you can find here.

#2 Pawn Shop

I read an article recently where a photographer purchases a Canon 24-70 f2.8 Mark II for only $50 from a pawn shop in perfect working condition. The pawnbroker told him the lens was broken.

The lens had a UV filter attached that was cracked but when removed the lens itself was fine. When the photographer attached the lens to his camera he noticed it was switched to manual focus. He turned it to auto and it was in perfect working order. So he got a $2000 lens for only $50.

#3 eBay

Even if you don’t buy your lens on eBay it’s a great place to go and see how much a certain used lens is worth. The trick is to search for the lens then use the filter option to only show sold listings. You can see all the lenses you’re looking for that have sold in the last 90 days. This will give you a good idea of exactly how much to expect to pay for the lens and more important how much it’s worth.

Also on eBay you can find bulk liquidators who may be selling items as is and roll the dice. I had a friend purchase a Wacom Cintiq 21UX DTK-2100 21-inch Pen Display – Graphics Monitor with Digital Pen that normally retails for $1150 as is for $100. It was missing the power cord. He purchased a power cord for $30 and the tablet was in perfect working order. So he got a $1150 Graphics Tablet for only $130.

HINT- You can research lenses on eBay then purchase them below value on a classified service like Craigslist or at a Pawn Shop. This way you could use the lens then flip it later on eBay to make a profit.
