One thing I always try to remember about shooting portraits is that the image is about the subject not the background. Early in my portrait shooting I’d always be looking for a beautiful large background. What I discovered overtime is that clean and simple is usually my best solution.

Of course this depends on what kind of a portrait you are creating, and your lens choice also matters. If you want to use a wide-angle lens for a scenic portrait, then location matters tremendously.
